Headache

The most common kind of headache starts in the neck, which is why a physiotherapist can do something about it. We treat the cause, and we work on stopping it coming back.

Headaches make everyday activities painful and difficult. They come in different forms, cervicogenic, tension and migraine among them, and can sit at the back, sides or front of the head and move around. How often they come, how long they last and how hard they hit is very individual: for some a dull ache, for others a searing pain that stops the day.

What triggers them

Posture, repetitive movement, long stretches at a computer and stress are the usual triggers. The most common form, the cervicogenic headache, is set off by sustained tension in the muscles of the neck. It is referred pain: felt in the head, but coming from the neck and upper back.

How physiotherapy helps

Physiotherapy can help with every form of headache. Joint mobilisation, soft tissue release, retraining the control of the head and neck, and a home program of strengthening and stretching all reduce headaches.

We also work on prevention: advice on your desk and workspace set-up, your posture and your general health, so the headaches have less reason to return.
